Angel and Jon – Park of Roses engagement session

It’s no secret that I am a sucker for great light.  And, for Angel and Jon’s engagement session at the Park of Roses last week, we had it in abundance.

Angel and Jon’s was an extra special engagement session for me and I’m so happy that I could do this for them.  While I cannot be at the wedding, I wish them all the love and happiness in the world.

Tiny baby newborn photos – Columbus Ohio photographer

Hard not to love a tiny baby newborn and his tiny baby newborn photos!  Emily and Don, whose wedding I photographed three years ago, recently welcomed Don the III into the world.  What a sweet, cute, tiny baby newborn he is, too!  It was great seeing Baby Donny’s parents again and I’m so happy they invited me over to photograph him as part of my Real Life Forever portrait program.

I’ll quit gabbing now so you can look at some pictures.

Why I like this picture – Columbus Ohio photographer

It’s no secret that I love a picture that tells a story.  When I can sum up a neat little story all in one image, it makes my eyeballs happy.  In the following picture, the wedding party and I headed to Katherine and Chris‘ favorite ice cream shop for some treats after the ceremony.  Katherine’s maid of honor kept trying to get Katherine to wear a poncho while eating her purple ice cream, but Katherine refused.  By the time Katherine got to the end of the checkout line, a drop of the raspberry ice cream had plopped from the cone right onto her dress.

The story I love in this picture is the bridesmaid blurry in the foreground munching her ice cream and the other girls around Katherine trying to remove the ice cream from her dress.  To me, it’s the perfect set of contents to tell a great story.

Weaving, the end. For now. – Columbus Cultural Arts Center

The final week of weaving coincided perfectly with finishing my two rag rugs.  The final rug weaving went quickly; it was just “leftover” anyway – leftover warp, leftover green rag – the latter of which I ran out of after about 18 inches.

Cutting the whole thing off the loom left the final task of doing the fringe.

After I said my goodbyes and cleaned up around my loom, I walked to my car with my rugs tucked under my arm and felt sad, almost like I might cry.  Kind of like the last day of school, with summer looming ahead of me and another round of classes off in the distance.

The finished large piece:

Weaving update – Columbus Cultural Arts Center

I’ve been plugging away at the weaving per my usual routine, and since I just finished my first rag rug (all but the final details) and have started a new rug with what’s left of the previous rug’s warp, I thought it would be a good time to write an update.

The first rug is not yet cut off the loom.  I need to finish the edges and do a little fringe.  As with the scarf, it ended up being considerably longer than original estimates.  Like, significantly longer.  The finished rug was to be 30 by 40 and it ended up being 30 by about 51, with at least 30 more inches of warp left, hence the start of a new little rug.

I absolutely LOVE the first rug.  It is so cute and I almost can’t believe I made it!

The red is the “junk”, which I decided to make a design element because it looked so nice.

When I came in last week, the teacher bunny had left me a present.

I’m really liking the way my new rug is coming along.  I ended up with a lot of green fabric left over, so I am using mop cord to make up a new design.

Karen and Zach – North Bank Park / Short North engagement session

I had a fun time photographing Karen and Zach’s engagement session.  Even though the weather was overcast and chilly, it was still nice enough to be outside.  And, besides, it’s the company you keep and not the weather anyway, right?

Check out how cute they are:

Cakes for a Cause 2012 – Mid-Ohio Foodbank, Columbus Ohio

It’s that time of year again, when the city’s best bakers gather to auction off their delicious goodies to benefit Mid-Ohio Foodbank.  The absolutely fabulous duo of Emilie Duncan and Kasey Conyers outdid themselves with the planning as did the bakers with their baking.  The bar was definitely raised and the entries this year were phenomenal.  Monica Day from NBC4 as emcee and auctioneer was wonderful and eked out every last dollar from the willing crowd.  Two Caterers introduced their new food truck, Sweet Carrot, which was a huge hit, and newcomers Kittie’s Cakes won the Sweet Taste of Victory award.

Why I Like This Picture – Columbus Athenaeum Wedding

One thing I like to think makes me a not-so-typical photographer is that I have a distinct aversion to sameness in anything.  If circumstances allow, I work to make a different picture of something that’s typically the same.  In the picture below, that would be the toast.  Sure, I took straight-on shots of the bride and groom (Melissa and Phil) being toasted, and pictures of the person giving the toast, and, of course, reaction of nearby guests.  But I always say to myself in situations that occur at most every wedding, “how can I make a different picture and still tell the story?”

In this picture, I worked my way around the table so I was standing between Melissa and Phil and the wall.  To me and my eye, what makes this image compelling is all the storytelling elements present:  the clinking of the champagne flutes, the smiles on their faces and, off to the right of the frame, the maid of honor with the microphone, tying it all up in a neat little package.

Do you have an aversion to sameness?
